SHEFFIELD - MUSIC CITY OF THE NORTH

Sheffield greeting card - view of the centre and adjacent countryside

Our Ladies Barbershop Chorus is based in this fine city. Sheffield is the fourth largest city in Britain and has a population of over half a million. It has an enviable reputation for the high quality steel and cutlery that, until recently,  formed the backbone its economy. Sadly, these industries have declined a great deal in the past couple of decades but new ways of earning a living are coming into the area. One of these is music! Sheffield has produced many world famous bands, singers and groups.

Our city has a fine City Hall which frequently hosts visiting musical performers, orchestras and stage musicals. We also have the Crucible and Lyceum Theatres which also put on musical shows from time to time. Hundreds of smaller halls, clubs and pubs support music in all its many forms, both amateur and professional.

The city has two Universities and many excellent schools, in which music plays a strong role in the general education of the students. The Universities have their own orchestras and ensembles, as do several of the schools. Barbershop music has, to this writer's knowledge, been taught in more than one of the city's schools!

A significant mix of ethnic groups in the city has resulted in a rich and wide variety of music, from Reggae to Rock, and from Bach to Barbershop!

We feel fortunate to be singing in this area, as part of the wider music scene. We are much appreciated by organisations that ask us to sing for them, particular in festive seasons such as Christmas. We visit hospitals and old folks' homes around that time.

Our male counterparts, Hallmark of Harmony are also Sheffield-based.

Stanage Edge ... gritstone crags on the West side of SheffieldIt is said that there is not one street in Sheffield from which you cannot see the green fields of the countryside! Whether that is true or not we can genuinely claim to have some of Britain's finest countryside within fifteen to twenty minutes drive of the city centre. To the West is the Peak District National Park, a beautiful area of limestone dales and gritstone crags.

Music is important out there also and you can often find concerts and other performances in the many villages and small towns of the Peak.

If you ever come to our city, be sure to look us up and then take in the sounds and sights of  Sheffield and its "Golden Frame", as its bordering rural areas have come to be known. Sheffield is an ideal base from which to visit and explore the other cities and countryside areas of the North of England. Within an hour or so's drive of Sheffield are the cities of York, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Derby.

Visiting Barbershop singers are made welcome... just email us with details of your plans.
